African vibes hit Holbeck this weekend

A new African music and culture event launches at ‘The Holbeck’ this Sunday (27 November 2016) – and the organisers are keen to insist that everyone’s welcome, to come get a taste of Africa.

The first of many such events?

The all-age event will run from 2pm until 12pm, and will feature live music, dance, comedy, food, kids activities, and more. Entrance is free, but with food and drinks on sale. The organisers plan for it to become a regular monthly event.

Ernest Brew, local resident and business owner, commented:

“We’re doing this for everyone. This kind of event is common back home, but there’s nothing like it in Leeds. We hope it’ll be an opportunity for different people to all come together, experience African culture, and have fun.”

‘The Holbeck’ (the former Working Men’s Club) is reputed to be the oldest social club in the country, is nowadays run by volunteers and thriving – but has recently found itself under threat following the discovery of asbestos on site; click here to find out more, and to support the club.
