Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
It’s the Middleton Elderly Aid Summer Fair on Saturday 10am-2pm. Get down to their Social Centre on Acre Road, LS10 4LF for tombola, raffle, cakes and buns, games, crafts, refreshments and more. All proceeds go back to help run the charity.
Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club’s First XI play Altofts CC on Saturday at 12pm. The home fixture is at their ground on Gipsy Lane, opposite Cockburn School, LS11 5TT.
The Big Bike Fix is visiting Cottingley on Saturday 12-3pm at the community centre (LS11 0HJ). If you need help getting your bike road worthy the team promise to attempt any job but can’t promise miracles.
The FBI Academy Majorettes are holding a Family Fun Day at the Whistlestop pub on Town Street, Beeston, on Saturday 12-5pm. There will be stalls, games, face glitter, sweet cones and ice cream. It’s free entry and the bar will be open.
Hillside Court Care Home in Beeston is also holding a Summer Fair on Saturday, 1-3pm. Stalls and crafts, live entertainment, animals, games, food and drink. Hillside Court is on St Anthony’s Road, LS11 8FG.
Snoligoster comes to Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Saturday at 7:30pm. Straight from the swamp, to set the record straight… Come and behold the Florida folktale legend, captured and shipped to her UK debut, for your twisted delight! Tickets at www.slunglow.org/shows
On Sunday you can enjoy a free guided walk organised by the Friends of Middleton Park exploring nature in the park, specifically trees and butterflies.
Bands in the Park continues on Sunday from 2:30pm at the Watsonia Pavilion in Cross Flatts Park (LS11 7NA). The last concert in this year’s series will feature the Lofthouse 2000 Brass Band. As usual there will be crafting activities for children with tea and cake served in the pavilion.
Hunslet RLFC take on Whitehaven in the Championship on Sunday at South Leeds Stadium, LS11 5DJ. Kick off is at 3pm, tickets from: hunsletrflc.ticketco.events, kids under 16 are free and if they are wearing their community club shirt, accompanying adults pay just £5. There is also reduced entry for Active Leeds members.
The Skelton Rangers Summer Play Scheme runs from Monday-Thursday offering wild play at the Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Storton for 8-12 year olds. Tickets here.
Beeston Hill Community Association will be meeting at Building Blocks Centre on Maud Avenue, LS11 7DD, on Monday evening, 6:30-8pm.
Support, rest and relaxation are on offer to survivors of domestic abuse on Tuesday at the first of this month’s Survivor-led Sisterhood meeting. St George’s Centre, Middleton, 11am-1:20pm.
The first of the Youth Service’s Summer Activity Days takes place on Tuesday at Blenkinsop Field, Acre Road, Middleton, LS10 4HT. The free event runs from 12-3pm.
A Councillor advice surgery will be held at Middleton Elderly Aid’s Social Centre on Acre Road on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30am.
Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.
The Salvation Army hold their monthly Friendship Lunch on Thursday, 11am-1pm at their base on Hunslet Hall Road, LS11 6QB. It’s a warm space with chat and games etc plus a free snack lunch.
There’s another Youth Service Summer Activity Day taking place on Thursday at Cardinal Square, Beeston, LS11 8HS. The free event runs from 12-3pm.
There is a Police Contact Point at Cottingley Community Centre on Friday, 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.
Breeze In The Park comes to Cross Flatts Park in Beeston on Friday with two sessions: 12-2:30pm and 3-5:30pm. Expect sports, games, art and music – and, of course, Breeze’s famous giant inflatables.
And finally, on Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Labour Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Crosby Street; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.
