A fruit garden with an international flavour for Hunslet Moor

An international orchard is being planned for an old ‘knot garden’ on Hunslet Moor and local residents are being asked which trees and shrubs should be planted.

The garden is located behind the Hunslet Moor Hub, under the purple tower blocks of Crescent Grange and Crescent Towers. Fruit Works Co-operative are working with the Friends of Hunslet Moor and Leeds City Council and aim to plant some edible trees and bushes in the garden this winter.

A spokesperson for the project said:

“People from all over the world live in this area and we want to plant some of the delicious fruits from those lands here in Hunslet.”

Plants that have already been suggested include Figs, Mulberries and Walnuts from Kurdistan;  Sichuan peppers, Loquat, Jujube tree and Persimmon from Hong Kong; and Plums and Cornelian Cherries from Poland, but the project is keen to hear other suggestions.

They would also like to hear from you if you would like to volunteer to help with the planting or the longer-term maintenance of the garden.
