Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.
We start this week on Holbeck Moor, the site for the annual Holbeck Gala. Lots of stalls, kids activities, live music and food from 12-4pm on Saturday.
Dragon Boat racing on Leeds Dock is just one of the attractions at the Leeds Waterfront Festival which kicks off this weekend at various sites along the River Aire. You can find a full programme on their website here.
Earlier on Saturday there are several coffee mornings, all running from 10am-12pm. You’ll find them at: Beeston Parish Centre, Town Street; United Reformed Church, Nesfield Road, Belle Isle; and the Church of the Nazarene, Grove Road, Hunslet.
St Peter’s Church, Petersfield Avenue, Belle Isle holds its Summer Fayre on Saturday afternoon from 1:30pm.
Jobseekers looking for help with CVs and interview skills should get along to South Leeds Stadium on Sunday where the Hunslet Rugby Foundation are running an Employability Motivation Course, 10am-1pm. Attendees will also be able to watch Hunslet’s match later on Sunday for just £5.
The game, kicking off at 3pm, is a crunch match for promotion-chasing Hunslet RLFC as they face second placed Doncaster. Tickets are £15, concessions £10 and kids under 16 go free.
The Phoenix Brass Band will take to the bandstand in Middleton Park, by the lake, on Sunday at 2:30pm, organised by the Friends of Middleton Park.
Whilst over in Beeston there’s a change to the advertised programme as the Friends of Cross Flatts Park kick off their season of Bands in the Park. At 2:30 pm Gold Blend present ingneous mashups of your favourite tunes –
Then at 3:30pm Tim Dawty and the Liberators – 3 piece with sparkling guitars and top draw tunes.
A week of community meetings kicks off with the Middleton Community Group who meet on Monday at 6pm at the Middleton Elderly Aid Social Centre on Acre Road.
Also on Monday, the snappily named Greenmounts and Surrounding Area Tenants and Residents Association meets at Rowland Road Club at 6:30pm.
On Tuesday the Inner South Community Committee meets at Manorfield Hall in Belle Isle at 1pm. The Open Forum section of the agenda is your opportunity to ask questions or raise issues with our nine Councillors.
On Wednesday evening it’s the turn of Cottingley Hall TRAC which meets at the community centre at 6:30pm.
The beautiful new ‘Cosmic Rhapsody’ mural on the Jamyang Buddhist Centre / Slung Low Warehouse, Rydall Place, Holbeck will be officially unveiled at 5pm on Thursday.
Later on Thursday it’s the turn of Hunslet Carr Residents Association who meet at Woodhouse Hill Community Centre, behind the Bay Horse pub, at 6:30pm; and Beeston Community Forum meets at Beeston Village Community Centre, off Town Street on Thursday at 7:30pm.
And finally, opera comes to Holbeck with a production of Benjamin Britten’s Noah’s Flood on Friday. This is a collaboration between Slung Low, The Manchester Collective and Ingram Road Primary School. The show is part of Leeds 2023 Year of Culture and is being staged at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck. Tickets, if there are any left, can be booked at www.slunglow.org/shows
