Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week in Hunslet where The Church of the Nazarene host their monthly coffee morning with affordable breakfast on Saturday morning, 10am-12pm. Lupton Street, LS10 2QR.
Around the corner at Middleton Railway it’s Model Railway weekend with layouts in the engine shed and specialist retailers – a treat for modellers. 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday at the Moor Road station, LS10 2JG
It’s the Rain Catch Launch at Rowland Road Play Patch (LS11 6ED) as Yorkshire Contemporary unveil the new rainwater play installation, designed with local children. Drop in between 11am-2pm.
There’s a quiet hour on the inflatables on Coopers Field before Belle Isle Gala gets underway fully at Windmill Primary School at 12pm. There’s lots of live music and dance performances, as well as stalls and a dog show. Organisers have worked hard to keep food, drinks and ice creams at affordable prices.
Holbeck Gala also gets underway at 12pm on Holbeck Moor. This year’s attractions include circus skills workshops, a bird of prey display, farm animals, free inflatables, Kidz Klub doing activities, drumming, free school uniform swap, a remote control car track and much more.
The FBI Academy Majorettes are holding their Summer Fayre at the Falconers Rest pub on Thorpe Lane, Middleton, LS10 4EP on Saturday 12-5pm. There will be a bouncy castle, food, stalls, games, face painting, candyfloss and ice cream. It’s free entry, dog friendly, and the bar will be open.
On Saturday afternoon the Beeston Repair Café returns. Bring broken electricals, clothes needing alterations, a bike that needs attention. The volunteer fixers will do their best to mend them. 1-4pm at St Luke’s CARES shop, 246 Dewsbury Road, LS11 6JQ.
Lock Lane are the visitors to Hunslet ARLFC on Saturday afternoon at Hunslet Club Sports Village, opposite Morrisons, kick off at 2:30pm.
The Friends of Middleton Park are also holding their monthly litterpick on Sunday, meeting at the visitor centre by the lake at 1:30pm. Equipment is provided.
As it’s the first week of June there are a number of residents meetings taking place, starting with Middleton Community Group which meets on Monday, 6-7pm, at the Middleton Elderly Aid Social Centre, Acre Road, LS10 4LF.
The Garnet and Oakley Tenants & Residents Association also meet on Monday at 6:30pm at the St Luke’s CARES Charity shop, 246 Dewsbury Road, LS11 6JQ.
Buy, Sell, Swap is the new version of the jumble or car boot sale and you can take part in one at Manorfield Hall Community Centre, Newhall Road, LS10 3RR on Tuesday 10-11:30am. Entry is free, refreshments will be on sale, get down a buy, sell or swap new and used items.
Are you struggling with your computer? If so drop in to Tech Tuesday at Jamyang Buddhist Centre in Holbeck (LS11 9RQ), 10am-2pm for expert advice.
Stronger Together is a friendly support group for parents, guardians and carers who care for children and young people with disabilities. It is a monthly space to chat and share. The next meeting is on Tuesday, 11am-1pm at BITMO’s GATE, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH.
SEN-tastic are hosting a drop-in for parents and carers of children with special educational needs. They offer advice, support or just an ear to listen. 9:15-11:15am at St Luke’s Church on Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD.
Hunslet Tenants and Residents Association meet on Wednesday from 4-6pm for their monthly meeting at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, Waterloo Road, Hunslet, LS10 2NS.
On Wednesday evening The Friends of Middleton Park host as Oddsocks Theatre present their own version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Fun for all the family. Wrap up warm and bring a picnic and seats or blankets for sitting on. Oddsocks perform whatever the weather. On the bandstand in Middleton Park, refreshments available in the visitor centre.
There is a Police Contact Point at Cottingley Community Centre on Friday, 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.
On Friday evening Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club are holding a Softball Cricket taster session for women and girls from 6-7pm at the Gipsy Lane ground, opposite Cockburn School, LS11 5TT.
And finally for this week, Surreally Good comes to Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Friday at 7:30pm. Say hello to Scott – The finest ‘Edutainment Officer’ in the business, a leading expert in “Overhead animation and lo-fi storytelling”, a renowned descendent of the ‘Turnbull Family Edutainment programme’ and a grieving son. The only problem is, he’s gone a little bit ’Freaky-Deaky’. Age guidance 16+. Tickets at www.slunglow.org/shows
