
Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week in Holbeck at the Jamyang Buddhist Centre which is hosting a Spring Wellbeing Day on Saturday from 10am-4:15pm. Choose up to four yoga/tai chi/sound relaxation sessions plus a one to one treatment for all £35. Booking essential at: jamyangleeds.co.uk/whats-on/spring-wellbeing-day
Next to Belle Isle where there is a group litter pick taking place on the estate from 11am-1:30pm. Meet at BITMO’s Gate centre, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH and return afterwards for pay-as-you-feel toasties and tea. All equipment provided.
Staying at the Gate, from 1-4pm the Belle Isle Repair Café will be back. The fixers and stitchers will be on hand to give your goods a second lease of life, you can even get your knives and scissors sharpened. At 3pm there will be a planning meeting for this year’s Belle Isle Gala. There will also be winter coats and tea and toasties will be on offer. From 1:30pm there will be a Councillor surgery.
Leeds United entertain Brentford in the Premiership, kicking off at 8pm on Saturday evening. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after the match.
The Still Sunday Yoga Session takes place at St Matthew’s community centre in Holbeck (LS11 9NR) from 10-11am. The gentle yoga session will include breathing techniques, guided meditation, gentle movements and relaxation. It’s brought to you by Holbeck Together and Being You Leeds. Hunslet RLFC face Barrow Raiders in the Championship on Sunday at South Leeds Stadium, LS11 5DJ. Kick off is at 3pm, tickets from: hunsletrflc.ticketco.events.
On Sunday evening Leeds Knights play their final game of the regular season taking on the Peterborough Phantoms in the NIHL National Division. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.
The Hunslet Moor Residents Forum meets on Monday evening at 6:30pm at Hunslet Moor Community Hub near the purple tower blocks. Councillors and the police will be attending to answer questions and provide updates on local issues.
A Councillor advice surgery will be held at Middleton Elderly Aid’s Social Centre on Acre Road on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30am.
Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.
The Salvation Army hold their monthly Friendship Lunch on Thursday, 11am-1pm at their base on Hunslet Hall Road, LS11 6QB. It’s a warm space with chat and games etc plus a free snack lunch.
St Luke’s Tenants & Residents Association postponed their their bi-monthly meeting last week because it clashed with Eid celebrations, it will now take place this Thursday at St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, LS11 8PD, starting at 6:30pm.
There is a Police Contact Point at Cottingley Community Centre on Friday, 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.
Did you know that the Hamara Centre is a litter picking hub – if you want to borrow litter picking equipment to do your own litter pick, you can ask at Hamara during their opening hours. Hamara is also hosting a litter picking day on Friday, meeting at the centre on Tempest Road at 10am, with refreshments afterwards.
On Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Crosby Street; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.
And finally, Rooted, the new crafting group are holding another workshop this Friday evening, 7:30-9:30pm making Easter Wreaths. The workshop is at 153 Beeston Road, call Tania to book on 07917 157830.
