Free horse shows at Royal Armouries Museum

Families are invited on an epic Mongolian adventure this summer (Wednesday 22 July – Monday 31 August) at the Royal Armouries Museum in Hunslet, near Leeds Dock.

The Royal Armouries dock-side tiltyard, known for hosting legendary jousts, is being brought to life this summer with daily live Mongolian horse shows. Staged alongside their special exhibition ‘Genghis Khan: How the Mongols Changed the World’, this day out provides the perfect mix of entertainment and education.

See spectacular riders demonstrate the many techniques the Mongol horseman used to build their empire; from mounted archery to two handed maces, this is a show you won’t want to miss.

Head inside the museum and follow the trail through the Asian and African Gallery featuring Batu The Fast, a Mongolian messenger and scout, before making your own paper ger (yurt).

All of these activities are free – every day of the school holidays! Booking is not required, but the museum does recommend booking free general admission tickets for your party for the day you are coming.

Horse shows will be running twice daily at 11am and 2pm, from Wednesday 22 July – Monday 31 August.

And if you want to make your Mongolian Summer complete, explore the brand-new exhibition, Genghis Khan: How the Mongols Changed the World, with stories and treasures from the Mongol Empire, many of which have not been seen outside Mongolia before. Exhibition tickets are £9 per adult, free for Under 16s and £7 for concessions.

Mongolian Summer at the Royal Armouries has been supported by Leeds City Council as part of Leeds400.

As a registered charity, visitors can support the Royal Armouries’ programme of family events by making a donation. Every donation helps the museum to continue inspiring visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
