Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week with the Middleton Pop Up Market. You’ll find lots of lovely handmade items including clothing, jewelery, soaps and food; all made by local people at Middleton Park Circus from 10am-2pm.
Over in Belle Isle Trinity Network host their Community Reflections Café on Saturday 10am-12pm at the United reformed Church, Nesfield Avenue, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG
The Canal & River Trust are holding a free guided walk exploring Leeds Dock and the River Aire on Saturday morning 10:30am-12:30pm. Learn more about the heritage of the area, get some fresh air and meet new people. Meet at the David Olewale Bridge near Asda House, the walk finishes at the Royal armouries. Book here.
It’s Hunslet Festival on Saturday, running from 11:30am-4pm on the recreation ground off Grove Road and Church Street. There’s a hatful of entertainment, rides, live animals, stalls and food, so get down and support this great community event.
Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club’s First XI play Keighley CC on Saturday at 12pm. The home fixture is at their ground on Gipsy Lane, opposite Cockburn School, LS11 5TT.
A Northern Tr*nny Hootenanny comes to Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Saturday at 7:30pm. Saddle up for a joy-fuelled, sequin-spattered gender journey of self discovery, as Canal Street Kings founder, trans trailblazer and international cabaret renegade Hunter King presents his debut musical. An award winning, queer parody epic where Disney meets Dolly Parton by way of Manchester’s gay village. Tickets at www.slunglow.org/shows
The Friends of Middleton Park present Middleton’s Got Talent! On Sunday afternoon, from 12-4pm on the bandstand by the visitor centre. A music festival celebrating South Leeds bands, singers and dancers. With DJ Danny compering, plus face painting and arts and crafts, there’s something for all the family.
Join Better Beeston for a community litter pick. Meet on Lady Pit Lane at the junction with Stratford Street at 1pm, equipment provided.
Hunslet RLFC take on Salford in the Championship on Sunday at South Leeds Stadium, LS11 5DJ. Kick off is at 3pm, tickets from: hunsletrflc.ticketco.events, kids under 16 are free and if they are wearing their community club shirt, accompanying adults pay just £5. There is also free entry for Active Leeds members.
The South Leeds Community Kitchen will be cooking up a free meal on Sunday, 4-5:45pm, at St Mary’s Church, Town Street, Beeston (opposite Nisa).
Proving that we have more in common than that which divides us, Laurel Bank Day Centre in Middleton are hosting a Great Get Together on Monday from 11am-3pm. Call in for live music, cake stall, tombola and more. 100 Middleton Park Avenue, LS10 4HY.
It’s World Cup Breakfast Morning on Tuesday down at St Matthew’s Community Centre. Holbeck Together are holding these events every Tuesday during the tournament until 21 July. Watch highlights from the games in the café area with tea coffee and pastries, 9:30-11am.
There’s a chance to find out more about the Middleton Pride in Place project that will see up to £20m invested in the area over the next ten years on Thursday. Drop in to Tenant Hall on Acre Close, LS10 4HX between 12-1:30pm or 6-7:30pm.
SEN-tastic are hosting a drop-in for parents and carers of children with special educational needs on Thursday. They offer advice, support or just an ear to listen. 12:30-2:30pm at St Luke’s Church on Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD.
Yorkshire Contemporary invites you to an unforgettable evening of contemporary performance art and live music on Thursday evening, 7-11pm. Cabaret Mystic takes over the historic Rowland Road Working Mens’ Club, bringing together Leeds based artists exploring alternative traditions, from folklore to the occult. Inspired by the spirit of social club variety shows, join us for an exciting line up of newly commissioned performances. Book your free ticket here.
And finally for this week, there is a Police Contact Point at Cottingley Community Centre on Friday, 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.
