Here’s a round-up of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week in Belle Isle where there is a lot going on at BITMO’s Gate centre, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH on Saturday.
First up there is a group litter pick taking place on the estate from 11am-1:30pm. Meet at the Gate and return afterwards for pay-as-you-feel toasties and tea. All equipment provided.
Then from 1-4pm it’s the Belle Isle Repair Café. The fixers and stitchers will be on hand to give your goods a second lease of life, and Sherie will be on hand to help with any digital issues. At 3pm there will be a planning meeting for this year’s Belle Isle Gala. There will also be winter coats and tea and toasties will be on offer.
Then from 1:30pm there will be a Councillor surgery and from 4pm growers and gardeners are invited to discuss how the community can make more of the growing spaces across the estate.
There’s a lot happening at Middleton Railway too this weekend. Santa is visiting on his holidays to mark a Green Christmas where there will be lots of reuse, recycle, re-loving toys, games and books. On Saturday there’s a free talk at 2pm about Matthew Murray and on Sunday a locomotive will be renamed Salamanca to celebrate the great engineer’s 200th anniversary.
SELENE is the story of the goddess and the dark side of the moon. It’s on at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Saturday at 7:30pm, pay-what you-decide. Tickets at www.slunglow.org/shows
On Sunday you can enjoy a guided walk organised by the Friends of Middleton Park exploring the Waggonways and Railways and the mark coal mining has left on the park.
Better Beeston are holding a community litter pick on Sunday afternoon. Meet on Maud Avenue at 3pm, equipment provided.
Hunslet RLFC take on Widnes Vikings in the Championship on Sunday at South Leeds Stadium, LS11 5DJ. Kick off is at 3pm, tickets from: hunsletrflc.ticketco.events, kids under 16 are free and if they are wearing their community club shirt, accompanying adults pay just £5. There is also free entry for Active Leeds members.
Monday sees the start of St Luke’s CARES’ free retail skills course – a chance to brush up your skills and confidence for the jobs market.
A Councillor advice surgery will be held at Middleton Elderly Aid’s Social Centre on Acre Road on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30am.
Welcome to the World is new series of creative, sensory storytelling adventures for babies aged 6 months to walking and their grown-ups. Explore stories through sound, texture, light and scent — creating magical moments together in a calm, imaginative space. Wednesdays 10:30-11:45am at Beeston Village Community Centre, LS11 8DQ
Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.
The Salvation Army hold their monthly Friendship Lunch on Thursday, 11am-1pm at their base on Hunslet Hall Road, LS11 6QB. It’s a warm space with chat and games etc plus a free snack lunch.
There is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Thursday they will be at St Matthew’s Community Centre in Holbeck, LS11 9NR from 10am-12pm.
An Inclusive Employment Fair designed especially for disabled jobseekers takes place on Friday, 2-6pm at the Scope Leeds Community Hub, 3 Brewery Wharf, LS10 1JF. This is a friendly, supportive space where you can meet employers, get advice, and build your confidence. Take part in practical workshops to build your knowledge and confidence. Have 1-to-1 chats with employers and support organisations. Get advice on your rights at work and how to request adjustments.
And finally, on Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Labour Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Crosby Street; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.
