Middleton Woods Parkrun Event 256, and 20th Parkrun Birthday.

Middleton Woods Parkrun runners on 20th Parkrun Birthday.

As October rolled in, we were treated to a mildly warm autumnal putting as we welcomed 71 people to our beautiful parkrun who ran, jogged and walked the course.

19 of you were first timers (we do hope you enjoyed and will come back).  11 of you recorded new Personal Bests – well done all.

Representatives of 23 different clubs took part and this week we welcomed athletes from Norwich and Oxford!

Just starting their parkrun journey was Daniel & Dominika. We hope you loved it as much as we do and would love to see you back next week.

As always, the biggest shout of the day goes to our enthusiastic band of hi viz hero’s.

Happy 20th Birthday parkrun.

It’s so much more than just a Saturday morning run… it’s a community that’s built on the best foundations, by the best people & long may it continue.

I’ve met some of the best people, had the best time, even more so since I started volunteering at Middleton Woods parkrun, which always helps me get through the tough times.

Massive thanks to all the Hi Viz hero’s that turn out every weekend, whatever the weather. You might not realise it, but you just being there, helps so many people in so many ways

Here’s to the next 20 years.

Ken says,

I have enjoyed being part of the Parkrun Family.

It all started for me at Cross Flatts Parkrun about 9 years ago. Jenny and Phil are 2, Park runners who I remember most.

I did all my 100 Park runs their, as with me having Dementia, was an easy course to follow.

I completed 97 Park runs here. Then I started having Arthritis in my Knee. I saw a Physiotherapist, who told me to give up running, as I was doing damage to my knee.

I needed to run 3, more Park runs to get my 100 Parkruns t-shirt and that’s what I did.

The Physiotherapist told me to go on walks instead of running.

So, I started to Marshal at Cross Flatts for a time and eventually started 3 walking groups.

1st, walking Group I started at BITMO GATE in Belle Isle. Was ok to start with and had around 12, members who joined the group, walking usually around Middleton Park. We stopped off at the Lakeside Café for refreshments before continuing with the walk and back to BITMO GATE. I ended the walking group, when it became clear that only me and 1 other person wanted to go on the walks.

The other walking group I started was when I moved home from Belle Isle to Middleton.

I made myself known to Sam at Middleton Elderly Aid and asked what I did in my spare time. I told her I started up a Memory café in Hunslet for people who had memory issues such as Dementia, and at that time i visited at least 3 more Memory Cafes during the week. So, I started a Memory café at Middleton Elderly Aid and the cafe is 8 years old this November. I still go to the Memory Café which is the last Wednesday in the Month.

Sam asked me if I would like to start a walking group.  I said of course. Me and others went on a First Aid course before the Walking group was set up and the group walked on a Wednesday.

It became so popular that we started to walk twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday. I retired from the walking group about a year ago, but the group still walks from the MEA center twice a week. The Walking group go to the www.leedsurbanbikepark.com half way for refreshemts.

I now Marshal at Middleton Woods Parkrun which is every Saturday. Run starts at 9am.

I also take pictures of people on the run and download to the Middleton Woods Park run Face book site. Visitors in particular love seeing the photos downloaded.

That’s it for now, enjoy the runs/walks. or whatever you do to keep fit.

Sam, on a Midldeton Woods Parkrun.
