Community choir to celebrate Leeds’ vibrant independent music scene

The Attic Sings: one-day community choir celebrates Leeds’ vibrant independent music scene

Sing local legend Corrine Bailey Rae’s iconic hit in honour of city’s musical legacy

Leeds is set to shine as The Attic Sings launches the first in a series of one-day choir projects, bringing together voices from across the city to celebrate its thriving independent music culture. On Sunday (24 May 2026), from 11am to 2pm, music lovers will gather at community arts space, The Attic, in Hunslet for an uplifting, collaborative singing experience, centred around Corrine Bailey Rae’s beloved track, “Put Your Records On”.

This unique event is open to singers of all abilities, offering the chance to learn, rehearse, and perform as a unified choir under the guidance of renowned Leeds choir leader Sarah Stead. Participants will explore vocal technique, harmony-building, and teamwork in an inclusive and encouraging atmosphere.

The programme puts Leeds at its heart, hosted at one of the city’s newest independent venues, Attic. The day will also pay homage to Corrine Bailey Rae, a proud Leeds native, who is not only one of Britain’s most acclaimed artists but also a true ambassador for the city. She recently told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “One of my biggest roles is that I feel like a real representative for Leeds around the world because I feel like lots of people don’t know the city.”

2026 marks 20 years since Corinne’s debut album went straight to number one in the UK and became the fourth female British act in history to have her first album debut at number one. It has sold more than four million copies.

Tickets for The Attic Sings are inclusive of singing and lunch, with parts and score sheets sent out in advance.

Sarah Stead, choir leader and managing director at Vera Media, a Beeston-based non-profit adult learning organisation said:

“This event really is a celebration of the thriving independent music scene in our city. We’re so supportive of what David and the team at Attic have created to champion independent artists in Leeds, hosting gigs and offering rehearsal space and more, we wanted to work together on something really special for musicians of all abilities in the city. Selecting a song from Corrine, who has also had success in the independent music scene with her 2023 album, Black Rainbows, adds to this theme even further.

“Whether you’re a seasoned performer or simply love to sing in the shower, this is your opportunity to connect with others and experience the joy of collective music-making.”
