A 200 year old mill in Holbeck that was central to the Industrial Revolution is the subject of a refurbishment plan that will include a 27 storey tower block.
Midland Mills on Silver Street in Holbeck nestles between Water Lane and the defunct railway viaduct. The Grade II listed buildings dates from 1802 and once made machinery for the textile industry.
The buildings have been altered and added to throughout their history and Nick Brown architects plan to follow this tradition adding a glass roof between the buildings and a modern corner unit.
The development will also see a 27 storey (84 metres) tower block housing 180 mostly one and two-bedroom apartments. By comparison Bridgewater Place (‘The Dalek’) is 110 metres tall.
A pre-application report was discussed by the City Plans Panel last week and a full planning application is expected to be submitted early in the new year.
