White Rose to host disability drop-in sessions as part of first ‘Purple Tuesday’

White Rose Shopping Centre is hosting a day of disability drop-in sessions next Tuesday (13 November 2018) to coincide with the UK’s first day dedicated to accessible shopping: Purple Tuesday.

Purple Tuesday, which is coordinated by disability organisation Purple, has been endorsed by the government and is being supported by owner and operator of White Rose, Landsec.

The centre is hosting a 9am–8pm drop-in session in the Central Atrium, inviting people with disabilities and their families and carers to share their views on the centre’s accessibility, and what can be done to improve this in the future. Guide Dogs UK will also be on site during the event, sharing information and accepting donations.

White Rose is passionate about ensuring all visitors can enjoy their time at the centre. It has recently published an Autism-Friendly Guide in association with local charity Specialist Autism Services, and its Cineworld hosts monthly autism-friendly screenings. White Rose also offers a free Shopmobility service which provides visitors with a free electric scooter, or powered or manual wheelchair.

In 2017, White Rose unveiled a new toilet and family changing facility complete with a Changing Places space. Changing Places toilets meet the needs of those with profound and multiple learning or physical disabilities, providing the right equipment, enough space, and a safe, clean environment.

Steven Foster, General Manager of White Rose Shopping Centre, said:

“It’s very important to us that our facilities at White Rose meet the needs of each and every visitor. We’re very proud of the work done so far to improve our accessibility, and we are keen to speak to our local community to discover how White Rose can become even more inclusive.”

White Rose’s Purple Tuesday drop-in session takes place in the Central Atrium on Tuesday 13 November from 9am–8pm.
