Tenants in Belle Isle are being asked if they want the Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation (BITMO) to continue managing council housing in the area.
The independent, not for profit organisation has managed council housing in Belle Isle since 1991 (originally as an Estate Management Board). It has a board made up of elected tenants and co-opted. It manages lettings, repairs and maintenance and all the other duties of a landlord, as well as running the GATE community resource centre. With over 2,000 properties BITMO is that largest TMO in the UK outside London.
As a Tenant management organisation it is required to ballot its tenants every five years to ask if they want BITMO to continue managing the housing stock. Having run three elections in 2004, 2009 and 2014 and with very high satisfaction score in recent surveys, BITMO are hopeful they will win the ballot.
If tenants vote Yes, arrangements will carry on as at present. If tenants vote No, the housing will revert to Leeds City Council and be managed by Housing Leeds.
Tenants have been sent voting papers and are urged to use their vote. Votes can be returned by post, at BITMO’s office on Aberfield Gate, or in the ballot box on the HUGO bus which will be out and about on the estate over yje next few weeks. Alternatively you can vote online here.
The ballot closes at Monday 23 September 2019 at 5pm.
