Hunslet lost again on the road today (19 May 2019) at Workington Town, going down 12-4 to the Cumbrians at Derwent Park.
Hunslet’s poor run continues with this loss following defeats at Whitehaven and at home to London Skolars in the league and in their last game two weeks ago to Workington Town in the 1895 Cup at South Leeds Stadium.
Dale Bloomfield got close to the line for Hunslet in the early minutes, but was pushed into touch before he could score. Defences were on top for most of the first half, but Town broke the deadlock on 34 minutes when Tom Curwen charged over under the posts. With Carl Forber’s conversion, Workington led 6-0.
Hunslet had a couple of chances to score. Gareth Potts got pushed into touch close to the corner flag and Jon Luke Kirby got over the line but was unable to ground the ball.
The second half was again a long arm wrestle with neither side able to make the breakthrough. Carl Forber missed two penalties, so with ten minutes to play it was still a six point game.
Hunslet then broke through the Workington pressure with an interception near their own line. A few plays later Nathan Chappell was heading for the left hand corner, but was stopped two metres short. The ball was then moved from left to right and Gareth Potts scored in the right hand corner. Joe Sanderson wasn’t able to make the difficult conversion, so the score was 6-4.
Workington Town finally got the decisive score with three minutes to go. Jamie Doran made ground with a jinking run from the controversial scrum and passed to Gordon Maudling who went over to score. Carl Forber kicked the extras to give Town a 12-4 lead and that’s how it finished.
Hunslet remain on 10 points from 8 games and sit in fourth position in League One. Next week sees a trip to Newcastle which has become a must win game if Hunslet are to deliver on this season’s early promise.
