Tommy Wass pub gets extended serving hours

A Beeston pub has been allowed later serving hours after reaching agreements with the council and police.

The Tommy Wass, on Dewsbury Road, can serve drinks until midnight on Friday and Saturdays after a one-hour extension was granted.

The south Leeds premises was also given permission to sell alcohol from 11am on Sundays, an hour earlier the previously permitted.

Councillors were told concerns were first raised by the police and the council’s Environmental Protection Team. But their objections were withdrawn after conditions were agreed to prevent public nuisance. Two public letters of opposition were also received by Leeds City Council.

George Domleo, representing Tommy Wass, said owner, Star Pubs, had invested £250,000 in the premises. He told a licensing sub-committee:

“This level of commitment demonstrations not only confidence in the premises, but also a commitment to operate responsibly.”

Objectors said the later hours could lead to anti-social behaviour and noise. One wrote:

“The proposed extension to midnight is unsuitable for this residential area. Longer hours will lead to prolonged sleep disturbance for my family and neighbours.”

Mr Domleo said licence conditions would include staff training, CCTV, and risk assessments on the need for door supervisors.

He told the licensing hearing: “This is a modest and carefully considered application.”

Councillors granted a variation to the premises licence following the hearing at Leeds Civic Hall.
