Security stepped up at arson-hit clubhouse

Further to our report of a fire at the former South Leeds Golf Club clubhouse, the Council have stepped up security at the site following more fires on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (22 and 23 July 2020).

In a statement, a spokesperson for Leeds City Council said:

“We are aware of an incident last night which was attended by the fire service. We have increased security and now have a 24 hour presence on site and will continue to frequently patrol the site. Whenever a report of any breach is received or identified on any visit, we attend and ensure the building is re-secured.”

Commenting on the situation, Jeremy Hayes from Leeds Urban Bike Park who are working on plans to turn the building into an outdoor activity centre, said:

“We are pleased that Leeds City Council have now put 24 hour security on site, hopefully this will stop the continued vandalism to what could become a valuable community resource.”
