White Rose Shopping Centre is celebrating World Mental Health Day on Thursday (10 October 2019) with an exhibition of poetry written by James McInerney.
The poems, selected to promote mindfulness, introspection, and the act of sharing kindness, will be displayed across the floor of White Rose’s Central Atrium. Visitors are invited to walk among the nine poem snippets and discuss, photograph, and share them with friends and family.
White Rose will also be hosting a space with Leeds Mind and TakeTen. The two charities will be on hand – with free doughnuts, brownies, and fruit – to chat to visitors about all aspects of mental health.
Steven Foster, General Manager at White Rose Shopping Centre, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with poet James McInerney, whose work is sure to make our visitors stop and think for a moment.
“We’re also proud to be working with Leeds Mind and TakeTen, two incredibly valuable organisations in our region. It’s important to open a discussion around mental health, which shouldn’t be a taboo topic.”
Charli Brunning, Corporate Fundraising Officer for Leeds Mind, said:
“Since Leeds Mind was founded in 1972, we’ve worked to deliver a wide range of services across Leeds. We aim to help people build on their strengths, overcome obstacles, and become more in control of their lives. We support people to discover their own resources, and to live their lives independently with mental health conditions.
“We’re incredibly grateful to White Rose for supporting our work. On 10 October, we’ll be on hand to share information, best practice, and to chat with visitors throughout the day.”
White Rose is also marking National Autism Week, with events from 6–11 October. Quiet Hours will be hosted from 10am-12pm Monday 7 to Friday 11 October.
White Rose recently worked alongside local charity Specialist Autism Services to create an Autism-Friendly Guide to the shopping centre. Additionally, White Rose hosts Quiet Tuesdays, allowing visitors to shop, meet, and eat music-free, from 10am – 12pm on the first Tuesday of every month.
