Young leaders at Hunslet Carr Primary School swapped classrooms for the corridors of power as they took part in the school’s annual Take Over Day.
On one special day each year, members of the School Council and children from Year 6 take on the roles normally performed by adults across the school. From Headteacher to office staff, site manager to class teachers, the children experience first-hand what it takes to keep a busy primary school running smoothly.
The event is designed to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills while giving pupils a greater understanding of the responsibilities that come with different jobs.
Noah, the school’s Head Boy, was Headteacher for the day and helped lead assemblies, visited classrooms and handed prizes to children who had worked hard all week. Holly, the school’s Head Girl, took on the role of the PE teacher and led football sessions on the playground to celebrate the start of the World Cup.
Take Over Day created a real sense of excitement around the school, with children embracing their new responsibilities with maturity and enthusiasm. Staff were impressed by the confidence, organisation and problem-solving skills shown by the pupils throughout the day.
Julia Roberts, the teacher who leads the school council, said:
“Take Over Day is one of the highlights of our school calendar. It gives our children the opportunity to develop valuable life skills, understand the importance of teamwork and appreciate the different roles that contribute to creating a successful school community. We are incredibly proud of the way they rose to the challenge.”
The annual event is part of Hunslet Carr Primary School’s commitment to developing confident, responsible and ambitious young citizens, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to lead, inspire and make a positive difference within their community.
By the end of the day, one thing was clear: the future is in safe hands at Hunslet Carr.
