On-going work to convert a former Grade II and Grade II* Listed flax spinning mill in Hunslet into residential apartments has been applauded by Historic England.
Laurie Magnus, Chair of Historic England and Trevor Mitchell, Regional Director (North East and Yorkshire) recently visited the site in Hunslet to review progress at the £50M plus Victoria Riverside scheme which is being developed by JM Construction (Leeds) Ltd.
Mr Mitchell said:
“JM Construction and their professional services partners are to be applauded for their vision and commitment to such an ambitious project.
“Textile mills were once the workshop of the world and the original Northern Powerhouse. They are fundamental to the history, culture and landscape of northern England.
“As Victoria Riverside demonstrates, mills are full of character and make for wonderful homes, work places and cultural spaces. Not only do they offer a tangible link to the past, they also deserve to be restored to their former glory and enjoyed by current and future generations.”
On completion Victoria Riverside will extend to approximately 350 units, including spectacular roof top penthouses. The phased delivery plan is expected to take four years to complete.
Meanwhile, JM Construction said that all 85 apartments in phase one are now sold and work is already underway on the second phase comprising of 74, one and two bedroom apartments. Prices start from £120,000.
John Mulleady, Managing Director of JM Construction, said:
“We are delighted by the positive feedback we received from Historic England. They have been tremendously supportive throughout the process, as have both Leeds and Bradford Local Authorities.
“The strong sales performance reflects the quality of the build, the impressive specification and the convenience of the location, both in terms of its proximity to the city centre and accessibility to the major road networks.”
The architects for the scheme are Bradford based Beckwith Design Associates.
