Cockburn MAT students sing at Wembley for 13,000 people

In March, 43 students from the three Cockburn MAT secondary schools travelled by train to London to take part in the Voice in a Million Concert at Wembley Arena.

Voice in a Million is a massed choir concert of 6,000 students that takes place every year and gives students from all over the country the opportunity to sing a variety of songs together to promote and raise money for Adoption UK.

This year, the students from Cockburn School, Cockburn John Charles Academy and Cockburn Laurence Calvert Academy were invited to perform one of the songs, ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ by Coldplay, on the main stage in front of 13,000 people. The experience was incredible, and they represented both the MAT and South Leeds with pride. The students had to learn a set of mirror image choreography. They demonstrated the MAT Values and Expectations throughout the trip and the students were elated at the opportunity that they had been given.

Following the concert, they had an overnight stay in London and spent the next day immersed in a vocal workshop in Pineapple Studios, shopping in Covent Garden and the trip was topped off by a matinee performance of ‘Hercules’ the musical.

Mrs Amos, MAT Director of Music said:

“It is wonderful that we are able to provide these opportunities for our students. To perform on Wembley Arena stage in front of a crowd that large is no small achievement and the students handled it brilliantly. We are so proud of them.

“This is certainly a moment that they will never forget. We would also like to thank West Yorkshire Music Hub and ArtForms, whose enrichment grant helped to fund the trip.”
