BIEWA celebrates International Day of Older People

Belle Isle Elderly Winter Aid (BIEWA) celebrated the International Day of Older People on Wednesday (5 October 2016).

Four organisations were invited to have stalls at the event: Age UK – Digital Angels – Morag Wright; Citizen’s Advice Service – Victoria Elmsley; Women’s Health Matters – Sally Blyth and Carers Leeds – Carrie Grey.

Each guest organisation was tasked with promoting different aspects of improving older peoples’ lives and their understanding of current issues. Age UK will be holding computer classes for older people in the Belle Isle area. They can also arrange for home visits to those people who are housebound. Please phone BIEWA on (0113) 277 8208 for more information.

Victoria Elmsley from the Citizens Advice Bureau can help older people to find a cheaper energy supplier and she will handle the entire transition of switching suppliers so older people can rest assured all is going well. Sally Blyth from Women’s Health Matters provided information on breast and bowel screening. Carrie Grey from Carers Leeds provided information and advice that was available to support those in our community who care for someone.

A buffet lunch with wine was enjoyed by all. This was followed by afternoon tea and cakes. BIEWA would like to thank all our supporters for attending, all four organisations for providing helpful information for older people to make informed choices, and all staff and volunteers who helped at the event.

Thank you – Sonny Garewal – Project Manager.
