Local charity SNAPS is launching a new football club on Sunday mornings for children with additional needs and their siblings but is in need of coaches to help run the sessions. Use of pitches for the new club has been kindly donated by The Hunslet Club and interest from families has been overwhelming. There are already 30 children who have registered interest in coming to the club as there is a severe lack of sports teams that children with disabilities can access.
Becky Wilson, Mum of Oliver who will be joining the new team said:
“We are so excited for SNAPS football to begin. Being a mum of 2 children diagnosed with autism I believe this group will allow my child to enjoy an activity that other families take for granted. We would never be able to join a mainstream football group as my son would not cope. There are no other football groups we have found that cater for autistic children. This club will allow us to make amazing memories and participate in a ‘normal’ activity that has been adapted to meet my child’s disability.”
SNAPS is determined to offer this opportunity to children with additional needs and their siblings but needs passionate football coaches to help deliver this exciting new project.
Lucy Owen, SNAPS Chief Executive said:
“Joining a local sports team is part of growing up and something every child should be able to experience. Unfortunately, however, there are often barriers that stop the children we work with enjoying the benefits that come with being part of a sports team. This new football club is a fantastic way for children to be able to be involved in a team, learn new skills, make new friends and take part in a wonderful sport. We are in urgent need of enthusiastic football coaches who can work with our young people to help them develop their football skills but most importantly have fun!”
