Work on installing security fencing at vandal-hit Hunslet Cemetery should be completed by the end of next February, council officials have confirmed.
As revealed in South Leeds Life’s news roundup last week, The Friends of Hunslet Cemetery group were boosted by an email from Cllr Kim Groves, which was posted on the group’s Facebook page.
The email indicated that there was movement at last in the Friends’ three-year camapign for better security measures.
And now the council has issued an official statement. A spokesman said:
“Following incidents of anti-social behaviour at Hunslet Cemetery over the past few years, the council consulted with the local community about how security there might be improved.
“As a result of that consultation we have decided to erect an ornamental bar and vertical rail fence along the exposed boundaries to the cemetery.
“This will enable the cemetery to be secured outside normal visiting hours.”
One of the campaigners, Eileen Leach, thanked South Leeds Life for the publicity given to the campaign so far. She added:
“I’d also like to say a big ‘thank you’ to councillor Kim Groves and also to our MP Hilary Benn because you have backed us and helped us achieve what we feel so strongly about and given us a light at the end of the tunnel.”
