On Friday (15 December 2017) St Luke’s CARES charity shop on Dewsbury Road held a festive get together. This was a celebration to thank all the volunteers for their hard work (both at Dewsbury Rd and the Middleton Shop).
St Luke’s CARES opens its doors to the community every day so it was no surprise to see the usual locals and shoppers joining in festive cheer, eating food and dressing up for the photo booth. One man in particular who comes in every day surprised us with ‘pitch perfect’ harmonica carolling, just before the booked entertainment Jonny Walker prepared his set for the afternoon!
Amongst the customers where the lucky winners of the ‘Name the Unicorn’ competition St Luke’s had been running over the last month at both shops. Wide eyed recipients clutched at their new prize; a giant cuddly unicorn, and chose a free washing machine. During this time Cllr Angela Gabriel came to join in and won some treats on the tombola – hosted by our fantastic volunteer Rara from the Middleton shop on Throstle Lane.
St Luke’s CARES currently helps support young people in the community by providing good quality second hand items at affordable prices. With a large warehouse stocking furniture and new white goods there’s always a bargain to find. St Luke’s CARES currently runs a seven week retail course above the shop (a new course is starting on Tuesday 9 January) please contact Lucy for more details.
The charity is also looking for local projects they could support as part of their new community fund launched here on South Leeds Life.
To get a taste of the day watch Jonny’s Facebook which was live streamed to 21,000 fans!
