Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook and Twitter.
We start this week with a tweet we spotted from Cllr Kim Groves (@groves_kim): “Observence of Remembrance Service Hunslet Cemetery Cenotaph Sunday 9th November at 3pm to pay respect to those lost in service.” Friends of Holbeck Cemetery (pictured) will be holding a remembrance walk on the same day.
Some of you may be familiar with local author Chris Nickson and his stories featuring historic detective Richard Nottingham. Chris has written a new story, inspired by a recent visit to Stank Hall Barn in Beeston. The story is set in 1745 and features the barn. It is published free on his website, but he encourages readers to make a donation to the Friends of Stank Hall Barn.
Beeston made is onto the Leeds Beckett University (formerly Leeds Met) website this week thanks to a collaboration between Basement Arts Project and some fine arts students. We will be reporting more fully on this film project in the near future.
Next to the Inner South Neighbourhood Policing Team. They have organised a community clean up in Holbeck on 29 November. They also reunited a brindle Staffie dog lost on Old Lane, Beeston with its owner and remind you that they have a Saturday morning drop-in at St George’s Centre in Middleton.
The Yorkshire Evening Post had a couple of stories from our patch this week. First up was partially sighted Jorja Brown from Holbeck who won a VIP trip to the London Eye in a competition run by Action for Blin People. Meanwhile at John Charles Centre for Sport, Radio Aire had organized a celebrity football match which raised £12,000 for Cash for Kids charity.
Local blogger John Cockburn, What Can I Do About It? has been watching the child sex abuse enquiry debacle and wonders if it’s conspiracy or cock up?
For another local blogger, Hannah Reid, some hand cream got her thinking about her grandmother. It over on Wondering The World.
Health For All have news of the Friday gardening club at Belle Isle Family Centre; a Halloween film showing of Monsters University; and the latest Shakti newsletter is out with news of a visit to Opera North.
Speaking of Health for all, their chief Exec Pat McGeever will be speaking at Beeston Community Forum on Thursday (6 November) about the future of Beeston Village Community Centre. Also present will be Sue Watson from Leeds United.
Holbeck Working Men’s Club are changing their name to ‘The Holbeck’ and are consulting on the new signage. They have also posted photos from last night’s firework display.
Take a look at the great photos of Hunslet Hawks taking the Championship 1 trophy down to the Beeston Broncos’ presentation night last Saturday.
The trophy will also be going to the Civic Hall on Thursday as the Lord Mayor hosts a Civic reception for the Hunslet Hawks. A recording of the evening will be made for Hawks TV.
And finally, an artist’s impression of how the trolleybus scheme will change the face of Hunslet’s Penny Hill Centre has been posted on the New Generation Transport Facebook page. We’re not sure what Hunslet Against The Trolleybus make of it.
