Spring and Summer promise to be busy for Get Set Leeds Local within Beeston Hill and Holbeck.
With events being planned, and new group ideas developing there’s going to be lots going on. Get Set Leeds Local looks at how collectively together we can build a more active community, to help make being active an easier choice for people.
On Tuesday (5 April 2022) 3–5pm we’re bringing partners together for a “Wheels on the Moor” event at Holbeck Moor. There will be rollerskating and skateboarding with LS-TEN, A Bike zone for kids, Bike tagging for anyone with a bike to get it security tagged and bike fixing as well as information.
We’re looking forward to more opportunities over the summer to bring groups together to share the good stuff that’s going on in their community.
ParkPlay launched at Brickfield Park in Beeston Hill this winter. Now as Spring and better weather comes it continues to grow. A free weekly session for all ages, giving local families something on their doorstep every Saturday at 10:30am. You can find out more or register online at park-play.com/parks/brickfield
After moving indoors for winter, Cross Flatts Park sees the return of sessions supported in some way by Get Set Leeds Local. ParkRoll (rollerskating) and Women’s Basketball will utilise the park once again for weekly activities. Check out Leeds Saturday Park Roll on Facebook and southleedsvalkyries on Instagram (basketball) for more information.
The popularity of the rollerskating, led by LS-TEN but the idea of a resident, would really value some volunteer support, so if you’d be interested in helping this fantastic community session then get in touch.
At Cross Flatts Park we’re also looking ahead at the cycle offer once again growing over summer. Cycle North deliver friendly free adult learn to ride sessions available to anyone Wednesdays 6–8pm, Fridays 10am–12noon and Saturdays 10am–12noon. You don’t need a bike, one can be provided.
A 12 week cycle for health programme launches from the start of April, Cycle for Health | Cycling UK with Cross Flatts being the venue for Leeds. Any group with training and insurance can access our fleet of bikes for a group activity.
Through our partnership with British Cycling we have 2 ride leader courses coming up in Leeds. If you’d be interested in becoming a ride leader, and supporting an existing group such as South Leeds Lakers, or delivering your own led ride sessions then get in touch. A women’s only (Breeze) course is on Saturday 9 April and a Let’s Ride course on Saturday 7 May. If you’d like to help inspire more people to get fit, have fun and ride bikes with British Cycling Guided Rides then contact us (details below). Full training, kit, insurance and support provided.
Our community chest pot is still available to support the seed of an idea from residents in Beeston Hill or Holbeck. Over the last month we’ve been pleased to support projects which will help learning disability group People Matters enjoy games and activities on Holbeck Moor; support Good Deeds to access Streetgames training to upskill its volunteers which support young people to be active; and Recovery Runners to access Mental Health First Aid training. The Community Chest Pot is up to £300 for community good ideas which support people to move more, as well as providing training and upskilling opportunities.
Get Set Leeds Local is funded by Sport England and delivered by Active Leeds (part of Leeds City Council).
