
Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week in Beeston where Leeds Dads will be holding another free Soft Play session, 10am-12pm on Saturday morning at Little Angels behind the Tommy Wass pub, LS11 7HL. This for dads and pre-school children and there’s free tea and toast! Book: leedsdads.org/events
Also on Saturday the Middleton Pop Up Market is back. You’ll find lots of lovely handmade items including clothing, jewelery, soaps and food; all made by local people at Middleton Park Circus from 10am-2pm.
Over in Belle Isle Trinity Network host their Community Reflections Café on Saturday 10am-12pm at the United reformed Church, Nesfield Avenue, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG
Let’s Move: South Leeds is all about fun, family, activity and community pride. Find local sports clubs and give it a try. Cross Flatts Park on Saturday 12-3pm.
Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club’s First XI play Hartshead Moor CC on Saturday at 12pm. The home fixture is at their ground on Gipsy Lane, opposite Cockburn School, LS11 5TT.
Wigan St Jude’s are the visitors to Hunslet ARLFC on Saturday afternoon at Hunslet Club Sports Village, opposite Morrisons, kick off at 2:30pm.
Nine Sixteenths is a journey through 3 acts, exploring themes of representation and pop culture with a nostalgia for the early 00’s, and the hopes and dreams of four black female performers through a visual variety of devised theatre, dance and lip sync. It’s on at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Saturday at 7:30pm, pay-what you-decide. Tickets at www.slunglow.org/shows
The Still Sunday Yoga Session takes place at St Matthew’s community centre in Holbeck (LS11 9NR) from 10-11am. The gentle yoga session will include breathing techniques, guided meditation, gentle movements and relaxation. It’s brought to you by Holbeck Together and Being You Leeds. If you’re looking for something more energetic there is a chance to try Morris dancing at Middleton Railway on Sunday from 1-4:30pm with Aire Valley Mixed Morris. No experience needed, free, but a donation appreciated.
Join Better Beeston for a community litter pick. Meet on Lady Pit Lane at the junction with Stratford Street at 1pm, equipment provided.
The South Leeds Community Kitchen will be cooking up a free meal on Sunday, 4-5:45pm, at St Mary’s Church, Town Street, Beeston (opposite Nisa).
Leeds Civic Trust are hosting a walk entitled Holbeck & The Industrial Revolution on Monday, 2-3:30pm. This guided walk gives a brief history of railways in Leeds, the start of the Leeds-Liverpool canal, Holbeck as a centre of early days engineering and the history of Tower Works, including the remarkable story of Matthew Murray. On Tuesday there is another fundraiser for Cottingley Community Centre from 4-6pm with crafts, plants and tea. This will be co-hosted by ‘friends from Sweden’, play is free, food is £2 and there will be a tuck shop.
SEN-tastic are hosting a drop-in for parents and carers of children with special educational needs. They offer advice, support or just an ear to listen. 9:15-11:15am at St Luke’s Church on Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD.
Holbeck’s theatre company Slung Low warmly invites you to join them for Flying High: Creating Flags of Awe & Wonder, a very special flag-making project for our times, which visually and colourfully captures and celebrates all that is AWE-some and WONDER-full about our Holbeck and South Leeds communities. Wednesday, 10:30am-3pm, free.
Hunslet Tenants and Residents Association meet on Wednesday from 4-6pm for their monthly meeting at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, Waterloo Road, Hunslet, LS10 2NS.
There is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Thursday they will be at St Matthew’s Community Centre in Holbeck, LS11 9NR from 10am-12pm.
St Matthew’s is also the place for Holbeck Together’s Wellbeing Breakfast Morning, also on Thursday morning from 10-11am.
Beeston Community Forum meets on Thursday at 7pm at Beeston Village Community Centre, off Town Street, LS11 8DQ.
And finally, get ready for a packed night of action featuring talented local boxers as The Hunslet Club host a boxing show with White Rose Boxing. The weigh in is at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets £20, under 16s £15, Ringside £30.
