Vote for Belle Isle music project in national awards

A South Leeds music project is up for a national award and they need your vote.

In Harmony CelloIn Harmony Opera North has been shortlisted for the Best Classical Music Initiative in the national Music Teacher Awards sponsored by Classic FM.

In Harmony Opera North launched in January 2013 and is inspired by the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and Venezuelan El Sistema, a world-renowned initiative that harnesses the power of music for social change. The project is delivered at Windmill Primary School and in the surrounding community of Belle Isle.

All 400 children at the South Leeds school learn a violin, viola, cello or double bass, playing weekly in challenging orchestras and choirs led by professional musicians, and inspiring the community with their journeys. In Harmony Opera North wants its young musicians to experience music that is spine-tingling and excellent – music that we hope will become ‘passports’ to other rich cultural experiences, aspirations and possibilities.

The Best Classical Music Education Initiative will honour an education project which has used classical music in an innovative way, shown musical excellence and had a positive impact on a significant number of participants.

To support In Harmony Opera North at the Music Teacher Awards you can vote via the Classic FM website. A short registration process is required, the closing date is Friday 17 January.
