The Ark Family Centre in Middleton offers a Warm Space and more

I went along to the Ark Family Centre in Middleton, with friends, one Thursday morning to see what support the centre was giving to the local Community. I was almost immediately asked if I would like a bowl of soup and a roll. I had just finished my lunch, so just had a coffee.

I noticed from the Poster that they offer mental health advice, and a warm centre to relax in. I saw some ladies knitting and my friend’s daughter crafting.

I spoke to Dorothy, a lovely lady and said I would put on the South Leeds Life Blog, to promote the Thursdays opening at The Ark. Dorothy sent me the following information.

“The Ark Family Centre Middleton, was originally The South Leeds Christian. The group, Ambassadors of Christ Global, took over the building in 2017. My husband Chris, who was the leader of the church AOC, had a vision that the building was to be used for community needs and renamed it The Ark Family Centre.

“After initial consultation with people in the area to find out what they would like to see taking place at The Ark, there was an overwhelming agreement for child/young people related activities.

“We have since then run Summer and Easter activity clubs at The Ark.

“Kirsty, who is part of our team, spent a lot of time working with Kidz Klub and built up a great rapport with children and families in the local area. Our long-term plan was to have a Children and Families support worker. With her previous social work skills and relationships with many families in the area Kirsty took on the role for AOC.

“During the Covid lockdown we worked with Morrisons and other groups to distribute food to families in Leeds 10.

“Unfortunately, in 2021 we lost my husband Chris, which was a massive blow not only to myself, children and family but the church family and community.

“We are and will be providing support with mental health for people and young people. Later in the year we hope to be starting some work through the charity, Flourishing Families enabling families to cook healthy meals on a low budget.”

The Ark Family Centre is located at 80 Throstle Lane, Middleton LS10 4EY. They are a Warm Space every Thursday 10am-4pm. Find out more on their Facebook page.
