Middleton Railway, another Friend of South Leeds Life, will be running their popular Santa Stream Trains again throughout December. You’re advised to book now to avoid disappointment!
The trains run every Saturday and Sunday starting on 1 December, with a special service on Christmas Eve, Tuesday 24 December. Santa rides on every train and each child is given a present appropriate to their age and gender as the train makes its way up from Moor Road station in Hunslet to Park Halt in Middleton Park. Adults receive a hot drink and a mince pie on their return. The first train of the day is at 10:30am, then trains run every 45 minutes until 3:45pm.
Steam trains have been running on the historic Middleton Railway for over 200 years. It was the first railway in the world to use steam locomotives commercially and was designed to bring coal from pits in Middleton to Leeds to power the industrial revolution. The museum in the engine house also reveals the history of Hunslet as the centre of the locomotive manufacture for the world.
The railway has been run by the volunteers of the Middleton Railway Trust since 1960. If you would like to support their work, why not help them by “buying a brick” in their new building on site.

A great organisation. The Santa train is well worth a visit!
We try and support middleton railway when we can and we did the Santa express last year but I’m afraid working on the basis of 2 adults & 2 children this would cost us a total of £30! I think this is over priced even though it is run by volenteers most families will be priced out of this brilliant little railway
Think this is great for the kids, really gets you into the Christmas spirit. Rich is right though, it is a little overpriced in these hard times.
I don’t think most will, it’s usually very busy. Other railways charge more, for example Kirklees Light Railway. When you add on travel costs etc it can’t be beat.
