Scalarama Leeds DIY Film Festival is hosting a fundraiser on Thursday (5 March 2026) at The Holbeck Working Men’s Club from 6:30PM.
Scalarama is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit film festival, dedicated to encouraging anyone to screen films, anywhere. The festival takes place throughout September and last year we had a fantastic and diverse festival of 32 events in mostly non-cinema venues around Leeds. The central idea of Scalarama is to create “Cinema by anyone, for everyone, everywhere” and over the years it remains an accessible, diverse and exciting alternative to traditional cinema.
The fundraiser is very important to hold as the funds raised from this event help keep our film festival going. The money from the fundraiser will go towards the production of our printed programmes and the new programmer’s initiative which supports two first-time programmers with the financial costs of their events.
At the fundraiser there will be a bake sale, a DVD and film related bootsale and a raffle where you could win some awesome prizes, such as a Pictureville Membership, a £25 tab at Hyde Park Book Club, a gift voucher for The Bookish Type and many more exciting prizes to be won!
There will also be.a film screeing of an incredible documentary Goodnight Brooklyn, all about a brilliant DIY music venue in New York, Death By Audio. From 2005 to 2014 Death By Audio served as an incubator for underground music, art and a non-traditional living environment. The film follows the venue organisers through the last weeks as they navigate the stress of losing their space to Vice Media. It also acts as an inspiration to anyone who wants to put on DIY events as even though they closed they had 9 awesome years of hosting amazing gigs and providing a safe space for creatives to express themselves and form a community. We chose this film as we share the same DIY spirit and there are similarities with Scalarama and Death By Audio as we also encourage friends with big ideas to realise their dreams with low budgets and make amazing things happen by having a community helping each other out with their film screenings.
Please be aware there are strobe and flashing lights throughout the film.
The event is 18+
Make sure to get a ticket, the tickets are Pay as You Feel and you’ll have a fun night and also help support Scalarama Leeds. Doors are at 6:30pm with the film roughly starting at 7:30pm.

South Leeds Life is published by a not-for-profit social enterprise. We keep our costs as low as possible but we’ve been hit by increases in the print costs for our monthly newspaper which have doubled in the last two years.
