Key Stage 2 pupils at Cockburn Ingram Road Academy swapped their classrooms for clipboards and high-visibility roles this week as they took part in a special Active Travel Inspector day.
Led by Tanya from Modeshift, the visit encouraged children to think critically about how their journeys to and from school could be improved. The pupils explored the surrounding area, identifying ways to make walking, wheeling, and cycling safer, easier, and more enjoyable for everyone.
Working in groups, the young inspectors assessed different aspects of the local environment, from pavement conditions to road safety features, before rating each area and sharing practical ideas for improvement. Their thoughtful observations highlighted both strengths and opportunities for change within the community.
Tanya praised the pupils for their enthusiasm and professionalism. She commented on how impressed she was with the children’s excellent oracy skills, as well as their exemplary behaviour throughout the session. “The level of discussion and insight from the pupils was fantastic,” she said. “They demonstrated real confidence in expressing their ideas and showed a genuine commitment to improving their local area.”
To recognise their efforts, each child was awarded a certificate of excellence, marking their contribution to promoting active and sustainable travel.
The initiative forms part of the school’s wider commitment to encouraging healthy lifestyles and environmental awareness, while empowering pupils to take an active role in shaping their community.
