Preferred Homes, the company behind the new Extra Care flats at Hunslet Moor House on Hunslet Hall Road in Beeston have donated £1,000 to New Bewerley Community School’s Christmas present appeal.
Headteacher Juli Aldwinkle and Inclusion Manager Cat Barnes visited the flats on Tuesday (26 November 2024) and were shown round the facilities, before being presented with a cheque for £1,000.
As well as 63 one and two bedroom flats, the scheme includes a large loung and café area which will be open to the public, plus a community meeting or activity room. The local shop, which was previously on the site and has been temporarily housed during construction work will move into the complex in the next few weeks.
Stephen Sorrell from Preferred Homes said:
“We’ve been delighted to welcome the school today, one of the first days of our opening of our brand new scheme. This is a fantastic community asset and we look forward to working with the school and bringing some inter-generational activity into our scheme and we’re delighted to be working here in Beeston with all the communities that surround our scheme and we’re looking forward to our first tenants moving in next week.”
Juli Aldwinkle commented:
“We’ve been trying to raise money to buy every child at our school a Christmas present. Thanks to this generous donation we’ve almost reached our target and we’re very grateful. Our school sits in an area that is in the bottom 1% for deprivation in Europe, so we think it’s really important that whatever the need or the social situation is at home, all our children deserve a present.
“Having a company move into the area that’s looking to give back to the community, that moral compass is really important. We look forward to meeting your residents and working with you in the future: some reading buddies, cooking buddies, or people to interview or do a jigsaw with.”
