Local kids brighten up Hunslet

This Autumn local children have done their bit to brighten up Hunslet through hiding beautifully painted pebbles around the community. Designs range from animals, fruit, rainbows, love hearts, messages and more!

The primary aged children are part of the Monday Club afterschool group run by Hunslet Initiative at the Involve Centre. The purpose of the pebbles is to bring some colour and joy to the community at what can be quite a sad time of year with weather worsening and nights getting darker.

Ben Hutchinson, project leader explains a bit more:

“The children have done a wonderful job decorating the pebbles and we have had great fun hiding them in some of the places they love about their community. We hope the local residents of all ages will enjoy seeing them and get involved in finding a new hiding place for the stones or perhaps decorate their own stones to add to the fun!! There are over 30 stones in total all with unique designs. I wonder if anyone can find them all?!”

The pebbles are part of ongoing project funded by National Lottery Community Fund aimed at celebrating and promoting pride in our community. Other activities as part of the project have included decorating plant pots to plant sunflowers and spring bulbs to brighten up the community; building bird boxes and bug hotels for local wildlife.

The kids led a community walk of Hunslet where they photographed their favourite places. At our group we have done a variety of interactive activities as a group and individuals about where we live. We have also visited Middleton Railway and Thwaite Mills to learn more and be inspired by the rich history of this area. Later in the Autumn we plan to work with an artist to pull together all of the activities and produce a piece of art that represents or reflects Hunslet.

We have had lots of fun and it has also been an interesting and insightful time through it all and hope others can enjoy the pebbles!

The Hunslet Initiative has been delivering activities for local children and teenagers since 2006. Past projects have included drop in youth clubs, sports acitivities & teams, issue based group work, detached, mentoring programmes and holiday clubs.

Monday Club has existed since 2011 and is a fun environment for primary aged children to enjoy after school. It takes place 3:15-4:45pm each Monday in term time and is kindly hosted by Involve Centre (Whitfield Avenue, LS10 2QE – next to the new library building). New members are very welcome anytime!
