Lift Cottingley bangs the drums for future musicians

Pupils at Lift Cottingley are set to benefit from new percussion instruments after the primary school secured a £780 grant from the Universal Music UK Sound Foundation.

The funding will be used to add to the school’s music equipment, giving pupils more opportunities to learn, perform and develop their musical skills.

Kelly Bentley, Regional Executive Principal at Lift Schools, said:

“Music gives our pupils a chance to be creative, express themselves and discover talents they may not have known they had. This funding will allow us to buy new percussion instruments and give even more pupils the chance to play, perform and enjoy making music together.”

Music is an important part of the curriculum at Lift Cottingley, with pupils encouraged to explore their interests and talents through a wide range of musical activities. They have opportunities to sing, learn an instrument, compose music and listen to and discuss music from different periods, genres and traditions.

The new percussion instruments will give pupils further opportunities to develop their musical skills, creativity and self-expression, while building confidence through playing and performing. They add to a growing focus on music at the school, where pupils are now making use of a new dedicated music room.

The grant is part of more than £3,000 awarded by the Universal Music UK Sound Foundation to six Lift Schools, including Lift Cottingley, Lift Maltings, Lift Hall Road, Lift St James the Great, Lift Trinity and Lift Caldicotes.

The Universal Music UK Sound Foundation is an independent music education charity established in 1997 to improve access to music education across the UK and Ireland. Its school funding programme provides grants of up to £800 for musical resources.
