Leeds Winter Coat Appeal returns for fourth year

People across Leeds are being encouraged to donate unwanted winter coats and clothing as the Leeds Winter Coat Appeal returns for its fourth year.

The Leeds Winter Coat Appeal, run by Wear and Share Leeds, is back again and asking residents, community groups and businesses across the city to donate good-quality second-hand winter coats and other warm clothing to help people stay warm through the colder months.

Since the campaign began, the people of Leeds have donated an incredible 30,946 items through the Winter Coat Appeal, helping thousands of individuals and families access free winter clothing while reducing textile waste across the city.

There are currently 20 public donation points across Leeds, including leisure centres and local businesses, where people can donate coats and winter clothing they no longer need. Additional donation points, including community hubs and libraries, will join the campaign from 2 November 2025, when donated coats will also begin to be made available to the public through selected collection venues across the city.

As well as winter coats for adults, children and babies, Wear and Share Leeds is appealing for donations of hats, gloves, scarves, fleeces and waterproof clothing. The campaign is also working with Leeds Baby Bank to collect baby sleeping bags, snowsuits and footmuffs to help keep babies and young children warm throughout winter.

Debbie Binnersley, Joint Charity Lead, said:

“As we launch the fourth year of the Leeds Winter Coat Appeal, we’re incredibly proud of what the people of Leeds have achieved. Since the campaign began, almost 31,000 items have been donated, helping thousands of people stay warm through winter while preventing good-quality clothing from becoming textile waste. This year we’re setting our most ambitious target yet and aiming to collect 10,000 items. It’s a big goal, but we know the generosity of Leeds is extraordinary. Every coat, hat, scarf, pair of gloves or waterproof donated brings us one step closer to reaching that target and supporting even more people across our communities through the colder months.”

Donations to the campaign will be accepted until 31 January 2027. From 2 November 2026, donated coats and winter clothing will be available free of charge from selected community venues across Leeds. The campaign will officially close on 28 February 2027.

From 2 November, donated coats will be made available free of charge through selected community venues across Leeds. Additional collection locations may be added throughout the winter as demand requires.

Coats and other items can be donated at:

Places For People, Stanley House, Leeds Dock, LS10 1PZ

BITMOs GATE, Aberfield Gate, Belle Isle, LS10 3QH

John Charles Centre for Sport, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ

Tracy Morgan, Joint Charity Lead, added:

“One of the things that makes this campaign so special is its simplicity. Most of us have winter clothing tucked away in wardrobes, cupboards and coat hooks that we no longer use, but that could make a real difference to someone else. By donating a good-quality coat or warm clothing, people are helping neighbours, reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable city. We’re looking forward to seeing Leeds come together once again and helping us reach our target of 10,000 donated items this winter.”

The campaign aims to ensure that winter clothing reaches the people who need it most while encouraging residents to give pre-loved items a second life rather than sending them to landfill.
