Leeds City Council is reminding residents that garden waste collections are going into their annual winter hi-bin-ation from the Saturday 4 December 2021. The service will once again be paused due to reduced demand during the winter period.
Leeds collects garden waste from more households than any other council in the UK, with crews across Leeds emptying over 4 million brown bins in 2021, equating to over 34,000 tonnes of garden waste – 2,000 tonnes more than usual. Leeds also remains in the minority of councils that does not change extra for the collection of garden waste.
The brown bin collections will resume again in March, however gardeners across Leeds are still able to deposit garden waste at their local household waste recycling centres – including Holme Well Road, Middleton, LS10 4TQ – for free throughout winter. Home composting garden waste and leaves remains by far the best solution for the environment.
Composting your garden and kitchen waste at home can help create excellent soil conditioner for your garden or house plants. Leeds residents can take advantage of 35% discount on selected compost bins, check www.leeds.gov.uk/compost.
The two thirds of households across Leeds who use a brown bin are able to check the dates of the final brown bin collections at www.leeds.gov.uk/mybinday. Or download the handy Leeds Bins app from Google Play or Apple Store to get bin reminders straight to their phones.
Leeds recycling centres are 7 days a week from 8am to 4pm during the winter months and any green fingered residents can dispose of garden waste for free. Residents also now no longer need to make a booking to visit recycling centres across the city.
Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s Executive member for Environment and Housing, said:
“As the winter months pull in, I would encourage everyone to make note of their last brown bin collection dates and have their brown bins ready for the final collection of the year.
“I would also like to thank the crews for their continued hard work and dedication during this challenging period, collecting the garden waste from brown bins in record amounts over the last year.”
3 things to get you composting and 1 thing you won’t believe!
- Get a compost bin: Leeds residents get a special 35% discount on compost bins from our partners at Great Green Systems
- Pick the perfect spot: the worms love a level, well drained piece of ground!
- Put the right stuff in: vegetable peelings, fruit waste, teabags and your autumnal fallen leaves are all great
- Creepy but true: pet fur and nail clippings can be composted too!

I hope Cllr Rafique and particularly Council Bin Service Managers are equally aware of the consequences of scheduled garden waste collections being missed. Just as when ordinary household waste collections are missed, residents in any district will in ultimately suffer from fly tipping, regardless of how much Council Tax they dutifully pay.
