A new Jobshop and a new Credit Union branch were opened in the St George’s Centre in Middleton yesterday (Thursday 5 September) by Cllr Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council.

The Jobshop will provide help and support to people looking for work in the area. It will also work strategically, looking at people’s existing skills, the skills local employers are looking for and bridging that gap through training.

Speaking at the opening, Cllr Kim Groves said it had taken a lot of work to get the Jobshop established and thanked the partner agencies including Igen, TUC Learn, Aire Valley Homes and Land Securities.

“The journey starts here. Getting our people back to work and securing the future for the next generation” she added.

Cllr Keith Wakefield talked about the importance of One Stop Centres like St George’s, bringing partner organisations together under one roof, in the heart of the community.

Chris Smyth, Chief Executive at Leeds City Credit Union thanked BITMO helping them set up a branch six years ago, which has now moved into the St George’s Centre. He said there are 2,600 members in LS10 and he hoped that this would help that number grow.

“This is the front line against loan sharks and payday loans.”
