Hunslet RLFC played host to 120 children from local schools at Friday’s home game against Doncaster (14 June 2019). The youngsters took part in a Duathlon event jointly organised by the Hunslet Rugby Foundation, Active Leeds and Positive Futures.
In wet and windy conditions the children ran one lap of the track (400m) at South Leeds Stadium, before transitioning onto bikes to complete another lap, before then sprinting the last 100m to the finish line.
With the World Triathlon Championships now being a regular visitor to the city it was great to see local South Leeds children getting a piece of the action.
There were 12 children in each team representing Hunslet St Marys, Hunslet Carr, Middleton St Marys, Clapgate Primary, Rothwell Primary, Beeston St Francis, St Francis of Assisi, Blackgates Primary, Westwood Primary and Gildersome Primary.
Hunslet Rugby Foundation’s Development officer Michael Nuttall who has been working in the schools commented:
“Friday was a great way to round off what has been a fantastic physical education programme. I would like to thank Rich Sadler and Jason Minnott from Active Leeds for their support over the last year and look forward to working with them in the future. It was a bit wet but the children have loved it. A massive thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make it a great evening.”
If you have ever fancied a go at a Duathlon (Run/Bike) then there will be an event for Adults and Juniors held in association with Go-Tri at Cross Flatts Park on Wednesday 7 August.
