Coaches at Hunslet’s Golden Team gym are celebrating as the latest novice professional boxer to have undertaken his training camp at the South Leeds club has gone on to win his debut bout. Pontefract’s Ryan Robinson, 32, defeated Sheffield’s Owen Durnan on an open-air show at Batley Bulldogs Stadium jointly organised by Leeds promoter Mark Bateson and York’s Henry Wharton.
“What an experience,” said Ryan. “Just about the best night of my life as a boxer and athlete. I can’t wait to get back in the ring. I enjoyed everything about it and felt confident after my camp. I stuck to the game plan devised with my coach Padraic McDonagh. Gaining experience is the point of a debut bout and my coach and I now know where improvements are required.”
Robinson started boxing aged 14. He and McDonagh have been friends for fifteen years. “I was delighted when Ryan chose to be coached at Golden Team for his professional debut. The camp as it’s called. Ryan made enormous progress over the 17 weeks and especially so in his mental outlook.”
