Siddal ARLFC 22-16 Hunslet Club Parkside
Hunslet Club Parkside went down to a 22-16 defeat, their second of the season in National Conference League Premier Division away to Halifax side Siddal yesterday afternoon (26 March 2022).
The Old Boys opened the game in bright fashion and were the first onto the scoreboard when full back Craig McShane crossed on 10 minutes for an unconverted try. There were few other positives for Parkside however in a first half which very much belonged to the home team. Siddal went in at half time with a 16–4 lead scoring three tries and two conversions.
Siddal were the first scorers in the second 40 to take a 22–4 lead on 47 minutes, but in total contrast to the first half the remainder of the game belonged to the visitors with a much improved performance. Returning No 9 Jack McShane put in a Player of the Match performance scoring two tries, both converted by Danny Rowse – but it was Siddal who held on for a 22-16 victory.
South Leeds Life asked captain Ben Shulver for his take on the game:
“Personally I felt disappointed but of course you are after a loss. The game was there for the taking and we didn’t play well for the majority of the time.
“There’s always positives and negatives you can take away from a game – the positives for us were that for that last 20 minutes we nearly pulled that game back and we have next week to rectify what we got wrong, especially in that first half.
“Today’s loss is part of a learning curve that will suit us well in the long term.”
There were no arguments in the South Leeds camp that the best team had won this game but also the feeling was that the future looks bright. The outstanding 2022 Betfred Challenge Cup run put the club into the spotlight but what was in effect a very tough pre-season fixture list of Featherstone Lions, Stanningley, London Skolars and Sheffield Eagles, with the added extra of all those games being in knockout competition, would have been a tough ask for any side.
NCL Premier Division Round 5 sees The Old Boys with a second successive game on the road away to Rochdale Mayfield next Saturday afternoon (2 April), before the next home fixture in Round 6 (Saturday 9 April) when Pilkington Recs will be the visitors to Station Moor.
