Residents of Holbeck were treated to a splendid variety of Christmas activities over the weekend 5-6 December 2015.
St Matthew’s community centre kicked off with the Holbeck Christmas Market. The hall was packed with Christmas gift stalls, cakes and a Santa’s Grotto. Ward Councillors; Adam Ogilvy and Angela Gabriel took to their tombola and pickle stalls to greet the public.
Halfway through the day, local choir group; Vocologee sang some Yuletide songs with their beautiful harmonies, and a bit of audience participation too. (Vocologee practice every Thursday evening at Old Chapel Studios in Czar Street Holbeck).
The next day, Sunday 6 December 2015, Slunglow and the Holbeck Underground Ballroom theatre company on Bath Road attracted people from all over the city including residents of south Leeds with Christmas cheer. The viaduct arches were filled with mulled wine, pastries christmas gifts and live music.
The excitment continued with the Holbeck christmas lights switch-on by the moor at 5.30pm (organised by Cllrs Adam Ogilvy and Angela Gabriel) which was followed straight after by Mosaic church welcoming the public inside St. Matthew’s community centre with hot apple drinks. The hall had been decorated with glittering lights and a band ready to lead the carols.
The service incorporated the story of Christmas which showed regular faces of the community of Holbeck each telling a line of the story.
It was great to see members of the Holbeck community come together to get the festive season started in style.
