Hamara Centre counters online rumours

Following an anonymous letter being posted on social media and further speculation in the comments alledging all sorts of malpractice in the running of the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston, the charity has made the following statement:

We are aware of an anonymous letter currently circulating on social media that contains a number of allegations about Hamara, its trustees, and named individuals.

These malicious allegations appear to be part of a targeted and organised attempt to damage the reputation of an important South Leeds charity—an organisation trusted by multiple public bodies to deliver essential services on behalf of the public.

Like many grassroots charities, Hamara underwent a reorganisation following the pandemic to ensure its future sustainability. Restructuring is rarely easy or welcomed when it involves staffing or service changes. However, the trustees have a fundamental duty to protect the charity’s sustainability in order to deliver its charitable objectives.

Hamara remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of governance and transparency, and operates an established, robust complaints and grievance process. The trustees strongly encourage individuals to use this formal process if they have genuine concerns, and to provide evidence so those concerns can be investigated thoroughly and transparently.

Regrettably, we are now taking legal advice regarding the steps we must take to protect the charity’s reputation.

To that end, we will provide no further comment pending that advice. We urge those who harbor a grievance with the organisation to consider the severe consequences of their actions and the detrimental impact they have on a vital local charity.
