General election 2017: candidates announced

Nominations for candidates standing in the General Elections have closed today (11 May 2017) and the list of candidates has been published. LS10 and LS11 sit within the Leeds Central constituency, represented since 1999 by Hilary Benn for Labour.

The candidates are as follows:

BENN, Hilary – Labour Party

CARLISLE, Ed – Green Party

COETZEE, Alex – Christian Peoples Alliance

DAVIES, Gareth – The Conservative Party Candidate

NASH, Andy – Liberal Democrats

PALFREMAN, Bill – UK Independence Party (UKIP)

South Leeds Life will be inviting all the candidates to state their reasons for standing and we will be putting the following questions to them, chosen from those submitted by our readers:

As a registered nurse since 1995 and having left the NHS in 2006 due to burnout because of exhaustion from long-term short staffing, I am now happily working in the private nursing sector – what will you be doing to improve the NHS in order to a) make me consider voting for you, and b) tempt me back to the NHS as a much needed registered nurse?

In a rapidly growing city, how would you ensure the city is more proactive rather than reactive when it comes to developments and the infrastructure around them. Leeds City Council seems to give the green light to many developments of housing or retail parks without any or minimal thought to local infrastructure such as roads, schools and health care.

How do you intend to stop the burglaries, unsociable behaviour etc that’s occurring in the Beeston area now? This is affecting people of all ages, race and religion!

Judy Sismey

Voting takes place on Thursday 8 June. In order to vote you must be on the electoral register by Monday 22 May.

If you are already registered to vote you do not need to re-register. If you do need to register you must now do this online here: You will need your National Insurance number and the process only takes a few minutes.
