Computer Corner: Time for a spring clean

As we move into the New Year, we all need to prepare our cars for the Winter ahead so we can be ready for any breakdowns and stay on the road.

Well, it’s the same for your Digital Devices, not necessarily for winter though, but we do need to keep up to date with maintenance and prepare them for breakdowns, etc. Although this information is primarily aimed at Windows users, the principles are equally applicable to smartphones and Tablets/iPads.

So here is my 4-point plan to help keep you on ‘on the road’.

1: Backups:
Ensure you have a backup regime so that you do not lose any of your documents or precious memories, i.e. photos. There are local (for example an external hard drive), online (often called The Cloud), or both backup system options to choose from, some with a cost associated and many which are free.

2: Maintenance:
Make sure that you have some Anti-Malware software running and make sure you apply updates to all the software that you use. There is no need to pay for anti-virus software, as there are systems built into Windows itself

3: Recovery:
Ensure that you have a recovery system enabled. You can reset to factory settings in the event of a disaster to clear the entire machine.

4: Passwords:
In all the time I have been working, the lost password is the main issue that I have had to deal with. There are ways to store your passwords securely; do not rely on paper notes.

I have a technical website that is free to use by anyone and offers extensive information, helpful links, and fact sheets on a range of technical topics. Just follow this link: www.tech-insights.uk
