Children’s activities for half term

Next week (28 May – 1 June 2018) is the May half term school holiday. If you are looking for ideas to keep your children amused, we have rounded up the activities that we know of below. If you know of other events running, please add them in the comments section below.

As ever The Hunslet Club will be running their fantastic Activity Camp from Tuesday 29 May to Friday 1 June, 8:45am-3pm. The will be lots to do including football, hair and beauty, games, crafts, baking, art, dance and more. Sessions cost £8 per day, £4 per half day with reductions if you book in advance. South Leeds Golf Club is running free golfing taster sessions for young people this half term. The sessions run on Tuesday 29 May from 2:30-3:30pm and Thursday 31 May 12:30-1:30pm or 2:30-3:30pm. To book your place ring (0113) 277 1676; or email: simonpga@hotmail.co.uk

Are you mad about all things Minecraft? Do you want to code your own game? Make a TNT explosion? Join in the Minecraft Mania at your local library. The free sessions run on

  • Tuesday 29 May 1-2pm at Dewsbury Road Community Hub
  • Wednesday 30 May 11am-12pm at Beeston Library, Town Street
  • Wednesday 30 May 2-3pm at Hunslet Library

The Friends of Middleton Park have organised two free play sessions. On Tuesday 29 May from 1-3pm you can join Tina from Forest Schools plus to use plants and flowers to print on fabric. Then on Wednesday 30 May from 1-3pm spring into play with dens, nature crafts and a mud kitchen with Amy from Wild Apple Play.

On Wednesday 30 May Tiny Tetley offers messy and creative play for children under 5 at Hunslet’s Tetley art gallery. Sessions are 10:30–11:30am and 11:45am–12:45pm, they are free, but booking is essential. Then on Saturday 2 June The Tetley has a Family Art Workshop. Taking inspiration from Phoebe Cummings, you can create your own beautiful botanical paradise in watercolours. Open to all but especially good for children aged 5–11, 11am–3pm, FREE, drop in anytime.

Middleton Leisure Centre’s Soft Play area will be open Tuesday to Friday 29 May – 1 June 9am-6pm. It has three levels of swings, slides and ball pools suitable for children aged 0-8 years. There are also open football sessions on the 3G artificial pitch each afternoon from 2-4pm, bring some mates and have a game, £1.50 each.

There is a Diving Camp at the John Charles Aquatic Centre for 7-14 year olds running on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 29-31 May from 9:45am-3pm.

There are also Tennis Camps at the John Charles Tennis Centre. Both take place on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 May; 8-16 year olds 10am-3pm, 4-7 year olds 10am-12pm. The full cost is £8.30 but there are reductions for Leeds Card holders. Parents must remain onsite during the sessions.

As well as its regular weekend openings, Middleton Railway will be open and running services on Monday 28 May and Wednesday 30 May. Family tickets cost £16, but entry to the engine house museum is free.
