Beeston in Bloom has commissioned local artist, Zoë Mitchell to paint a utility box near Holbeck Cemetery. The box commemorates this years’ 400-year anniversary of the Leeds Charter.
The Royal Charter, granted by Charles 1 in 1626, was the first step in self-governance and city status. The design includes a 400-year timeline of landmark Leeds buildings from the 1600s to 2026, including a very local landmark and one that was demolished in the 1800s. The colour scheme was inspired by the brightly coloured glazes used by the Middleton Fireclay and Burmantofts potteries.
Zoë says:
“It’s been great fun to work on over the last few days. I’ve really appreciated the chats and encouragement with local residents and passers-by.”
