Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was assaulted and seriously injured in an attempted robbery in Leeds.

Leeds District CID would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident which took place at about 6.20pm on Friday June 26 on Crosby Road in Holbeck.

It occurred after the victim, a 76-year-old local woman, was approached from behind by a man as she walked back from the shops.

She was then knocked to the ground by the suspect who, according to a witness, may have tried to remove her purse.

He then made off as passers-by came to the woman’s aid.

The victim suffered a serious but non-life threatening leg injury in the incident and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where she is continuing to be treated.

Detective Sergeant Phil Dodsworth of Leeds District CID, said:

“We are investigating this offence and would like to speak to anyone who saw what took place. At this stage we know the victim was knocked to the ground by the male and a witness has suggested he may have made an attempt to take her purse.

“The victim has been a resident in the area for more than two decades and was understandably very shocked by what has taken place.

He added: “This lady has received a serious leg injury and, given her age, there was clearly the potential for the consequences to be even worse.

“I would ask anyone who has information to contact myself at Leeds CID on 101 or the Crime stoppers charity, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
