Leeds City Councillor Jane Dowson, Deputy Executive Board Member for Children and Families, cut the ribbon at the opening. The new facilities have been developed alongside Child Friendly Leeds with children and families in mind, and include a baby change area, showers, and a Changing Places space. Changing Places toilets meet the needs of those with profound and multiple learning or physical disabilities, providing the right equipment, enough space, and a safe, clean environment.

Cllr Dowson said:

“White Rose Shopping Centre’s on-going commitment to families and child services is really refreshing, and these new facilities are a great example of their support for the city’s child friendly ambitions. They are a fantastic example of how businesses can make small changes which make a big difference for many Leeds families.”

Steven Foster, General Manager at White Rose Shopping Centre, said:

“We’re delighted to unveil our new South West toilet facilities. What may seem like a small change for some can make a shopping trip so much more pleasant for others, such as families with young children and those with disabilities, and we’re proud to make White Rose an inclusive place for everyone.

“All of our bathroom facilities are designed to be a clean, safe environment for visitors – especially children – and we take pride in offering such high-standard facilities.”

The upgrade is part of ongoing investment from White Rose into improving facilities at the centre, in order to offer an outstanding customer experience. At the end of 2016, the shopping centre commemorated the completion of its soon-to-be-unveiled IMAX cinema’s highest point. The extension will introduce six new restaurants, including Wagamama, TGI Friday’s, Chiquito and Pizza Hut, alongside an 11-screen, state-of-the-art IMAX Cineworld cinema, an event space, as well as a bespoke children’s play area.

The revamp follows that of the centre’s North East toilets, which were honoured with the ‘Loo of the Year’ title in the national Loo of the Year Awards 2015.
